Charcoal and deforestation

In Somaliland in northern Somalia, people are trying to survive by cutting down trees and making charcoal.  This means of survival is solution that ultimately is going to create a bigger problem.  The rapid deforestation is turning the area into a desert, which will make it harder for plants, animals, humans to survive.  I would resolve to save the long-term forest in lieu of someones short-term financial gain.  In order to do so, it would only be proper to provide the man with some alternate source of income, which is another huge task.  Either way, someones life is going to be greatly affected.

  1. It’s quite amazing how people would do whatever it takes to survive in this environment. I ‘am really hoping that this issue could be resolve real soon because the longer this kept on it can prove to be very destructive.

  2. These people are only cutting down the trees to make charcoal because it is the only option they have to get by. Although there's big consequences with doing this, I don't think they have much choice. The government, or even an outside organization, needs to work to create jobs for these people to have so they don't have to resort to practices that will downgrade their environment.
